A website you can change from your phone

The best time to fix the website is when you notice the problem, and you notice it on your phone. So the editor has to work there.

You notice the wrong opening hours standing outside the shop. You notice the old price in the van. You notice the typo in the paragraph when a customer reads it back to you. Every one of these happens away from a desk, on a phone, and the fix has to be possible right there or it is not going to happen today.

What that requires

It requires more than a page that shrinks to fit a small screen. Every control has to clear a thumb. Nothing can depend on hovering, because nothing hovers. The settings sheet has to rise above the keyboard rather than hide behind it. Dragging a section has to work with a finger. The menu you are editing has to be reachable in the same drawer a visitor opens.

And a phone frame on the desk

It also requires the opposite. At a desk, you need to see the phone view without leaving the editor, because that is where most of your visitors are. One switch draws the page in a phone frame, and you fix the mobile view where you can see it.

The rule

If you can scroll your website on your phone, you can edit it on your phone. Anything the editor cannot do there is something it does not really do.
